PGD is an increasingly popular tool that is used to select embryos with a normal number of chromosomes or to select embryos that are free from a gene defect carried by a parent. In order to perform PGD, a single cell is obtained by biopsy of the embryo. The single cell biopsy is then analyzed for chromosome number or for gene structure. Embryos with a normal analysis are selected for transfer.
