For Prospective Recipients

For many couples choosing donated eggs or sperm provide the only realistic option for fulfilling their dream of parenthood. In many cases, the male or female partner is unable to produce sperm or eggs of sufficient quality or quantity, and the use of donor gametes is an effective solution. If you choose to enter into the program, our experienced team of doctors, nurses and support personnel will guide you, step-by-step, in a personalized manner. We maintain strict confidentiality and exceed the quality guidelines proposed by the American Society of Reproductive Medicine.

DONOR EGG OPTION

Atlanta Center for Reproductive Medicine, through our anonymous egg donor program, can provide a couple with a suitable egg donor. We will assist you in selecting an egg donor that "matches" characteristics specific to you and your spouse/partner. Our donors are carefully screened; they undergo extensive evaluation, including psychological testing, infectious disease testing, genetic history and, where appropriate, genetic testing. By utilizing techniques of in vitro fertilization, the use of donated eggs combined with your partner's sperm, may allow you to establish a viable pregnancy.

In most cities, there is a long waiting list for recipients to be matched with an appropriate donor. Because of the expertise among the staff in our Egg Donor Program, Atlanta Center for Reproductive Medicine is currently matching patients with suitable donors immediately. Our donor program staff has special experience working with recipients and coordinating a recipient cycle with a donor from our program. It is important to note that there are a limited number of visits required for recipients. ACRM can easily accommodate out of town patients as much of the required testing can be done in your local area and the results forwarded to our office. If you are a candidate to receive eggs, please contact us so we can move toward meeting your goals.

DONOR SPERM OPTION

After you have met with your physician and made the decision to proceed with using donor sperm as part of infertility treatment a specialized interdisciplinary team will navigate you through the process and be available to address any questions or concerns.

PRE-SCREENING

In accordance with national guidelines set by the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), preconception blood work will be drawn either at ACRM or at another lab convenient to you. This testing includes infectious disease blood work and must be completed by both partners before the cycle starts. The donor who provided the sample was already tested for infectious diseases before the sample was collected and quarantined at least 6 months after it was frozen.

CHOOSING A SPERM BANK

Once you are ready to proceed with a donor sperm cycle, you will contact one of the banks for information regarding their donors. ACRM is not involved in a contract with any Cryobank nor do we place orders for the patient, the contract is between the patient and the supplier. ACRM will act as a third party receiver.

The Cryobanks we recommend most often are:

DONOR SPERM SELECTION

Depending on your circumstance and preference, you may want to choose a donor that would lead to a conception in which the donor has an appropriate blending of the physical characteristics of the husband and wife. While no match will be exact, careful attention should be paid to the physical characteristics of the donor as indicated in the donor list. It may be helpful to make a list of the most important factors to you in regard to hair color, eye color, height, weight, etc.

Care should be taken when choosing a donor should you want the child to have a blood type that is compatible with both parents. It is also important to consider the Rh compatibility of the donor with your Rh factor. If you are Rh negative, you may want to choose a donor that is also Rh negative. In certain instances of ethnic background where a suitable donor of a given blood type is not available, or in cases of a less common blood type such as AB, you may opt to choose a donor with a non-matching blood type in order to obtain other desirable characteristics.

SPECIMEN ORDERING

Once you have decided on a donor and are preparing to undergo monitoring for ovulation, it is time to order the specimens. It is crucial to do this well in advance so that the specimens are here when you need them for insemination.

  1. We recommend ordering at least 4-6 specimens. This will save you future shipping costs and will ensure that the specimens are here when needed

  2. Call the sperm bank and order the specimens. We recommend when possible, to order regular, unwashed samples, as they will contain a higher number of sperm per vial. We wash all specimens regardless of their initial preparation to optimize motility and remove any chemicals used during the freezing process.

  3. Once you have ordered your specimens you will contact our Andrology lab to let us know. This will allow us to expect your specimens by a specific time, so in the event they do not arrive on time, we can trace them with the shipping company.

  4. You may want to consider ordering additional specimens of the same donor if you are considering siblings. Donor specimens may be unavailable in the future.

COSTS

The costs associated with donor sperm can vary depending on several factors, including the number of specimens ordered and which sperm bank is used. You will meet with an ACRM financial counselor who will detail what your financial commitment will be and provide you with a guideline. Costs also differ according to which reproductive technique you will be utilizing, i.e. insemination vs. in vitro fertilization.
